Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum, now referred to by the Ministry as Competency-Based Education (CBE), asks teachers to describe what each learner can do rather than just rank them by marks. Report cards have to show performance levels for each learning area, strands and sub-strands, core competencies and values, and comments that actually mean something to a parent.
Schools that try to squeeze this into an 8-4-4 style mark sheet end up with report cards that confuse parents and take class teachers whole weekends to finish. Many schools also run more than one curriculum at once, with CBC/CBE in the lower classes and 8-4-4 or IGCSE elsewhere.
